SHOCKWAVE THERAPY
Effective pain relief for stubborn tendonitis
Do you have a stubborn tendonitis causing you discomfort, pain and affecting your daily life? Have you had it for 3-6 months or more and have not responded to all other treatments? Shockwave can give quick effective pain relief for chronic tendon pain such as plantar fasciitis (heel pain) , tennis elbow, greater trochanter pain syndrome (pain at the side of your hip), patellar tendonitis and achilles tendinopathy.
Effective, quick and non-invasive
With treatment times of less than 20 minutes you can largely continue your normal daily activities straight after treatment. With few exceptions, most people are able to have this treatment.
WHAT IS SHOCKWAVE THERAPY?
ESWT (Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy) is a non-invasive procedure that uses sound waves to stimulate healing in some physical disorders. It is thought that shockwave creates an inflammation (healing) response in the tissue that is being treated. The body responds by increasing the blood circulation and metabolism in the impact area, which in turn accelerates the body’s own healing processes.
DOES IT HURT?
It is common for patients to feel a mild sensation during and after the therapy but this does subside.
WHAT CAN I DO AFTER TREATMENT?
Any mild sensation felt after the treatment should not prevent you undertaking normal daily activities.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
This is dependent on how you respond to treatment. Best current evidence suggests that an average of 3 treatments is required, but this can vary.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
You will need to be assessed to ensure Shockwave therapy is appropriate for you. If you are new to the clinic a 30 minute pre-assessment appointment is required which costs £50. Each individual shockwave treatment costs £85. A discounted rate of £240 is available for purchase of 3 sessions.
WHO CAN HAVE THIS TREATMENT?
Most people who have chronic tendonitis would be able to have this treatment. Shockwave is not recommended for patients who are or may be pregnant, children under 18 years, where there is contagious skin disease or current skin infection. It is also not suitable to be used directly over an implanted device, over a tumour or a deep vein thrombosis.
ARE THERE ANY OTHER TREATMENT OPTIONS?
There are other treatment options for chronic tendonitis such as progressive loading programmes prescribed by a qualified Physiotherapist. Shockwave therapy is an appropriate treatment if such programmes have not been successful.
